Keeping Peace #7

Clement returned from work early holding a gift bag. Stephanie cast a casual glance at him sitting put before the news on TV.

No hastening to him, no kissing him welcome nor collecting his briefcase, no sitting him down nor pulling off his shoes as he removed his tie. She had stopped those romantic gesture ever since he shove her away on the second day of her refusal to dance to his tune.

“Hi, honey!” he greeted awkwardly. She arched her brows in surprise, her eyes still glued to the TV.

He picked the remote control from the side stool and minimised the TV volume, touched her shoulder, walked to her left and sat too close to her before handing her the gift bag.

“I got something nice on my way back.”

“Thanks,” she arched her brow again.

I wonder what he’s up to? She mused.

“Look, honey, I’m sorry for the stupid way I’ve been acting lately. I realised I’ve been immature and uncivil. I don’t know what came over me.”

Stephanie was dumbfounded. Whatever made him change his mind so abruptly, must be rash.

She looked on without a word, focusing her gaze on the flower vase behind him. Tears began to form in her eyes and she blinked severally to stifle a cry.

She didn’t know what to say. It was so unexpected. But within her, she was happy he picked up courage to repent.

“What do you say?” he asked.

“It’s okay. Are you sure you’re really comfortable with my decision?”

“Very sure. I thought deeply about it at the office today. If I truly truly love my wife, I should respect her rights and feelings.

“I’m glad you changed your mind.”

“From this day on, your earnings belong to you alone and should be managed by you. I’ll only ask for it when I truly need it but I’m sure I won’t.”

“Thanks for your understanding. I appreciate it.” She said and hugged him. She was close to tears while she lingered on his shoulder but he was thinking of the next step to take.

He wished John lived in his head to whisper words on how to get her to stop the pills. He wanted the baby making thing to start immediately.

Stephanie needed to call Mrs. Gelu immediately to update her about the new development but she had to wait till morning to do that. She didn’t want to spoil the sweet evening with such call.

They ate out that evening. She purposely didn’t make dinner. He had not touched her food for three days in a row. So she made up her mind not to waste food anymore. But since life had gone back to normal, she would resume her duty and happily too.

As they walked hand in hand into the street, she felt victorious and thought it wasn’t a mistake after all for her to make such move.

If someone steps on your toe, try pulling your foot away at least if punching is not an option.

She smiled secretly at her thoughts.

After dinner, Clement excused himself to use the bathroom but sneaked out to give John a call. He returned and they left the restaurant looking so peaceful.

John had told him over the phone to give a space of one week before talking to her about having a baby. He was okay with the suggestion. It’s perfect. He needed more time.
